History of the Wedding Garter Tradition

By: Sarah Dobson | Thursday 17th of November 2011 03:18:49 PM

Throwing garters is considered to be the oldest surviving wedding tradition. Back in Dark Ages it was customary for friends, relatives and guests to accompany the bridal couple to the marriage bed. At first this was to safely see the married couple ensconced in their wedding bed and once established the crowd respectfully left the newly weds to their own company.

The wedding garter toss became a game of sorts. The bridal party would toss the garter at the grooms nose and the person who successfully landed the garter on his nose would be the next to marry.

The custom became rowdier and bawdier until the guests were eager to help the bride out of her wedding clothes. The wedding guests would try to grab the bride's garter for good luck. It is thought to forestall such impropriety, the bride's garter was given to the mob as a distraction. Soon this became an established custom.

Throwing the garter to the groom's men is what remains of the custom. In Northern England the old custom was for male guests to rush the bride at the altar when the ceremony was finished and remove her garter from her leg. In the panic this usually meant the bride was knocked over and trampled on.

Gradually brides made garters easier to detach and finally to avoid threat of injury they tossed their garters away at the end of the ceremony. Garters were imbued with fertility and the bride's garter signified consummation, fulfillment, and progeny and was always fiercely sought after. Untying the bride's garter had a deeply symbolic act. In the past the lucky guest to receive the bride's garter would wear it proudly on his hat, before giving it to the girl of his choice for luck.

Another variation on this custom in the 19th century was for the local youths to race from the church to the bride's house. The first was given the honor of removing the bride's left garter. He would then tie this around his own true love's knee as a guard against unfaithfulness. In the North of England , the custom was for the man to wear the bride's garter in his hat.

Tossing the garter was reintroduced in the early part of the twentieth century. These days, the groom is responsible for removing the garter and tossing it at the eagerly waiting groomsmen at the reception. Much tamer that the early days. Bride would also have a second keepsake garter that they would keep with their wedding dress.

Wedding Garter Inspiration: Vera Wang's Witchcraft Collection

By: Sarah Dobson | Thursday 17th of November 2011 02:55:47 PM

I am crazy about some of the latest Vera Wang gown designs that debuted in New York City last month. The Vera Wang Fall 2012 collection called the Witchcraft collection, is described as “ Light, airy, concoctions of froth….inspired by black and nude undergarments, both mysterious and sexy, frivolous and fun, with transparent wisps of carefully organized tulle.” I am absolutely mad this collection and so visually addicted to a few of these gowns that I am already imagining the garters that should be designed to match. Black is gaining popularity in the wedding industry already, and with the recent trend boudior photography trend, a black Witchcraft garter could be just the right thing.♥

Happy La Gartier everyone and thank you so much to the creative minds behind Vera Wang for delivery such a stunning fall collection. Below are a few of my favorite gowns:)

Something Blue Bridal Show Los Angeles + La Gartier

By: Sarah Dobson | Saturday 12th of November 2011 10:57:33 PM

La Gartier is happy to be travelling to Los Angeles this upcoming January to be apart of the ultra-chic bridal show Something Blue. Something Blue is a boutique size wedding event showcasing some of the hottest trends happening right now in the land of weddings. Karla Randolph, the show's founder, created Something Blue with the idea that wedding shows should feel younger and more energetic than the average wedding show we all know so well. You know, that hotel ball room convention show that showcases card tables draped with tablecloths more than anything? Something Blue was created to be exactly opposite. To see for yourself, you can click here to view a video of the most recent Something Blue show in Los Gatos few months ago.

In January, Something Blue will be making its debut in West Hollywood and La Gartier is packing up its bags, hopping on a plane, and eating airline peanuts to be apart of it. Exciting, exciting, exciting.

Below are a few photos from the Los Gatos show and a link here to an article about the show!

Bride Andrea Antunes' Flower Girl Basket

By: Sarah Dobson | Friday 28th of October 2011 06:59:21 PM

It is so rare that I design wedding accessories outside of wedding garters, however when La Gartier bride Andrea Antunes asked me to design her flower girl basket I couldn't refuse. We had already custom designed her wedding garter-- a stunning vintage cameo wedding garter set to honor the memory of her grandmother-- and she wanted her flower girl basket to be designed in a similar way. I suggested we stay with the same rhinestone and pearl motif we had used ALL OVER her pearl dupioni silk garter by putting rhinestones and pearls around the rim of her basket, on the outside and the inside, and also along the handle. Andrea found a wonderful basket on Etsy, had it shipped to the studio, and below are the pictures of the final product. Send more work my way Andrea I think we are on to something!

Wedding Garter Set

By: Sarah Dobson | Thursday 27th of October 2011 11:24:33 PM

I have been getting so many requests for wedding garter sets recently, that I added a Toss Garter option to the shop. Now you can get a matching ivory or white satin toss garter to go along with whichever keepsake garter you choose from the collection. It is just a plain, simple satin band, made to throwing to a group of rowdy, single men. If you want your toss in any particular color, send an email to info@lagartier.com or use the contact form on the Contact page. Photos of the newest La Gartier wedding garter sets to come! For now, below is a picture of what the Toss Garter listing looks like along with my favorite new quote. Happy La Gartier everyone!!

Couture Wedding Garters

By: Sarah Dobson | Thursday 27th of October 2011 10:53:45 PM

Two entire Alexandre Desplat albums and two cups of coffee later and I have officially finished putting up the newest La Gartier garters to the "Garters" page. There are eight new couture La Gartier garters up as of right now, each with her own appeal and style. One of them is a simple toss garter option, as this has been much needed over the past few months for brides who want a simple toss away to match their keepsake. The others include the Pierce (personal fav), the Cherish, the Janie, the Rhianna, the Sydney, the Marina and the Janice.

Below are photos of the newest couture La Gartier wedding garters!!!

Custom Garter: Clouds Raining Hearts Garter

By: Sarah Dobson | Sunday 23rd of October 2011 08:19:46 PM

When make up artist Michelle Clark contacted me a few weeks ago about having a garter custom made for her best friend Tiffany, I was excited. One, it was obvious that Michelle cared very much about her best friend and wanted to give her a completely unique, creative gift for her wedding........which I adore because it makes the creating the garter that much more fun.  Second, Tiffany's wedding theme is "Clouds Raining Hearts".......full of felt hearts and rock & roll inspired details........such a completely original theme in my opinion!!!!! Tiffany and Brandon's engagement session had been covered by Rock And Roll Bride due to how irrisistable their engagement photos were. Hopefully their wedding will be too because her garter came out so wonderfully!!! Her garter design was inspired by three things: her black sash she will be wearing on her wedding day, her ruby red colored shoes, and all hundreds of thousands of tiny felt hearts that will be decorating her wedding day. We decided to design the body of the garter in a black satin, centered by a black satin and tulle bow to match her sash. To bring in her ruby red shoes, we dotted the wedding garter with tiny ruby red rhinestones. Lastly, to incorporate her felt heart motif, we hung three felt hearts by black yarn.....one blue, one fuschia, and one red. Below are pictures of the final garter!! In addition, below are Tiffany and Brandon's engagement session pictures from Rock And Roll Bride. What an adorable couple!! Undeniable!!
