The Creative Genius of Joy Thigpen.

That is an interesting name, isn't it? Joy Thigpen. I have come across it here and there on wedding publications over the past year or so, but it has only been within the past month that I have become very interested in this name. I found Joy through the popular wedding blog Once Wed, which is based here in Atlanta. Joy is the creative director for the entire blog. I always thought Once Wed was the sole brainchild of Emily Newman, but I learned last month that while Emily Newman is the writer and the founder, the creative genius behind the blog is actually Joy Thigpen. As I have recently learned, Joy Thigpen is the creative director for more things than just OnceWed. Joy is also a fabulous florist, event stylist, photographer and writer. I was on her website about an hour ago and noticed quite a few things about this woman that I like:
1. She is a good writer. When describing herself and some of the services she offers, she does a good job of coming across honestly. She also does a great job of explaining what she does clearly and without seeming boastful or full of herself. (something I am not fond of)
2. From the images she posts and the photoshoots she has styled, I can tell that this woman has a true eye for beauty and elegance. I was temporarily transfixed by a few of the images that are in her porfolio on multiple occassions. (See images below).
3. She is deeply creative and enjoys using natural elements in pretty much everything she creates.....which takes anything from an eight to a ten if you ask me.
4 Her creativity is smart in some way. I am not even able to explain what that means exactly, but I would defend it if questioned.
So, now that I have talked her up so much, you are probably interested to see some of her work, right? I am also going to post some of the images from her blog in the next blog posting. Sports Wedding Garters

Over the past year or so, I have designed so many sports-themed wedding garters I can barely keep track of them. I will be completely honest: I am not a huge fan of the whole college football type wedding garter, but I have gotten so many requests for them over the past few years that I finally decided this: If I am going to make a sports-themed wedding garter, I am going to make it the prettiest, most elegant wedding garter design that anybody has ever seen. Newest Design Crush: Julia's Poppies Design

So I have met another really amazing Atlanta-based designer. AND she is in the wedding industry. AND she is a she. AND she is around my age. I have to be completely honest: I really didn't know that there were so many awesome, young, fun, intelligent female entrepreneurs right here in Atlanta. Had I known, I would probably have gone out a TON more over the past few years. Ok, that's off subject. Anyway..........about three weeks ago I woke up fairly early one morning to attend a mandatory StudioWed meeting at The Foundry at Puritan Mill.(a must see if you live here in ATL) With my coffee in hand, I walked into this gorgeous sunlit room and met about a handful of other StudioWed ATL vendors. Among them was Jamie Wyckoff, the owner of a high-end wedding stationary company called Julia's Poppies Design. I instantly recognized a fellow creative. I don't know if it was the way she dressed or the way she carried herself, but I could tell that we probably would have hung out if we were in middle school or high school or something. (In fact, Jamie, if you are reading this, did you ever listen to Tori Amos? I bet you did.)
This girl's stationary is no joke. On her website, she describes her company as "a small studio specializing in wedding stationery". I think this is a total understatement. Her description should read "the most original and beautifully crafted wedding stationary ever created. If you continue your search for other websites, you will only be disappointed". Matching Toss Garters

Last night, I wrote a blog posting about how La Gartier is going to begin to offer two different types of toss garters: plain and.....well....not. You see, I have recently begun receiving tons of requests for toss garters that somehow match the brides' keepsake garter. So, within the next few months I am going to add a few listings to the website for those who want to order a garter that has a little something special. (I am loving the idea of a completely sparkly, girly, rhinestoned encrusted toss garter so I am hoping to add something like this....along with a pearl inspired option too)
Tonight I have decided to dedicate the next full thirty minutes of my life to blogging about some of the prettiest toss garters I have recently made. So, sit back, enjoy and take in the following five gorgeous matching toss garter/keepsake garter sets created for five different very unique, special La Gartier Brides.
Above: This is La Gartier Bride Ashley Hansen's oh-so-beautiful garter set. For her toss, we decided to put one single, large rhinestone at the center to help it match her keepsake. I really loved creating this garter for Ashley. We actually ended up texting back and forth for days to get her garter design absolutely perfect and became friends along the way.
Above: This garter set was created for La Gartier Bride Darla Hoy. Darla wanted a toss garter made out of smocked organza simply because she liked it. We decided to use pink velvet elastic underneath the smocked organza to bring in the pink roses that were being sprinkled throughout her wedding. This garter set screams glamour to me.
Above: This garter set belongs to La Gartier Bride Linda Matthews. For her toss, we wanted to bring in the plum and ivory pearls that were used to embellish her keepsake.......but we didn't want to use too many of them. So, we decided to do use about twenty plum and ivory pearls but alternate them along with ten very sparkly, discreet rhinestones.
Above: This garter set was created for La Gartier Bride Katie Beilin who wanted a tiny letter "H" initial to hang from her toss garter. This was the letter of what would soon become the first letter of her new last name. Precous idea, don't you think? (It was all Katie's....I take absolutely no credit here)
Above: This garter set was created for La Gartier Bride Lindsay Hasselbring. Lindsay had purple orchids all throughout her wedding and wanted to incorporate their beauty into her garter design somehow. After doing a ton of searching, I finally found two very very precious orchid inspired pendants in Egypt. Both she and I had to wait over a month for the orchid pendants to arrive, but once they did we knew that putting one on her keepsake and one on her toss would be the best way to make the two match. Isn't this garter set stunning??

Toss Garter Options: Plain or Particularly Pretty

Here at La Gartier, we offer two types of toss garters. That is, if you are looking for a simple throw away garter, we sell plain ivory or white satin toss garters for ten dollars each on The Garters page. (See pictures below to get a better idea of what the ten dollar toss away garters look like). Brides can add them to their cart along with a keepsake garter of their choosing. However, lately I have had a TON of brides request toss garters that are a bit above average. For example, I had a bride just yesterday ask me to put rhinestones around the entire body of her toss to match the rhinestone beading on her keepsake garter. Just a week prior, I had two brides ask me to put pink satin bows at the center of their toss garters to, as they said, "dress them up" a bit.
Why am I writing this post? And telling you all about toss garters? Well, I have decided to start offering really beautiful toss garter options to all of my brides. I figure that if I am getting a steady number of requests for them, I might as well go ahead and create a few different styles of super gorgeous, above-average toss garter styles. Newest Obsession: Claudia McDade Photography

Last week I had the pleasure of meeting photographer Claudia McDade at the Inspired Bride Event. Claudia and I were both participating in the event as industry professionals and had a wonderful time meeting and chatting with dozens of giddy brides throughout the day. As the day went on, I got a chance to talk with Claudia and learn a learn a bit about her and her work. And now I must brag about her: Claudia McDade's photography is stunning. She is not only a fabulous wedding photographer,
but she also is an incredible fashion photographer. in fact, Vogue Italy just recently asked Claudia to shoot an editorial styled shoot for them. I don't know if there is a photo that this woman cannot take!! Recently, Claudia has begun shooting bridal boudior photography sessions which are trending big time. While I see a ton of photographers offering boudior services, not all of them are shooting as tastefully and as artfully as Claudia. Angry Birds Inspired Garter + Live View Studios

A few months ago I had the pleasure of collaborating with Brent and Anna Deitrich of Live View Studios for an Angry Birds inspired photo shoot. Angry Birds you say? Yes. At first, I was skepitical about how well Angry Birds would translate into a wedding theme, but after seeing the photos that Brent and Anna just sent me, I am floored by how gorgeous this shoot turned out. For the shoot, I designed two different feather-based wedding garters. One was a red quail feather garter with an ivory velvet elastic band. The second was a black feather wedding garter with a center rhinestone brooch that was to-die-for. Below are photos of both of the garters along with some of my favorites images from the shoot.
